![]() The Presidents Report
Im very happy to announce that our proposal to move
our model flying operations to the south end of Moon
Lake Park (current soccer field 11 location) was
approved by the Rice Lake Park Board at the February
23rd Park Board meeting. Any club members that have
questions or concerns about the move south should
bring them to our next meeting.
This proposal was initiated because a majority of our
members were not happy with our current location, and
had requested a more usable flying site. Our existing
location on the old airport runway has basically turned
into a parking lot and hub for all park activities. I
believe our club officers and board members agree that
this move will be a big improvement over the old airport
runway situation. The
tradeoff is that we will have to
vacate our present location.
The Park Board will be scheduling our time of usage,
and we should not have the scheduling conflicts with
soccer that we experienced in the past. The Park Board
is recommending that we use our new south park flying
location until we can find a better home outside of the
park. The Rice Lake Park Board members have been
very accommodating to our needs, and they are trying
to help in our search for a new location. We currently
have a very welcome presence in the park, but the
Park Board Members are fully aware that ongoing park
development will continue to affect our ability to fly
safely inside the park environment. Only time will
prove how this new location works.
I personally feel we should not assume permanent
residence in this new location, and that we should
continue our search for a dedicated model flying site
location. We have been given permission to access
the south park through Evelyn Burtons property (west
side of the park).
Our access to the south end may take some
preparation this spring, but the field (was soccer field
11) is almost a turnkey location. Many of our members
test flew planes off of the south soccer fields last
summer, and it was found to be a very smooth area.
We will be removing the goal posts from the field 11
areas, and we should have a clear approach from north
and south. Part of our proposal was to put up a sun
shelter west of the new south field location. Our
members already voted for the purchase of a sun
shelter last summer.
We had a great winter fun fly on Feb 12th at Leons field
with near 50 degree, dead calm weather. Almost
impossible odds considering the time of year. A big
thanks goes out to Leon for picking that date. I would
like to thank Leon Olszewski, Rusty Selkow, Doug
