The President’s Report

I’m very sorry to report that Darwin Avery passed away on Friday morning, September 10th.  Darwin was a great asset to our hobby and a friend to many of our members.  He was a longtime member of our airplane club, and also served on our Board of Directors.  Some of us knew him as Grampa, as he owned and operated Grampa’s Train Shop on Lakeshore Drive.  Darwin recognized the need for a local model airplane supply outlet and came to our rescue many years ago. Many of our club members were first introduced to the hobby and the RLMAC while visiting Grampa’s Train Shop. Our club has grown because of Darwin’s loyalty to our hobby and his personal interest in our members’ needs.  The sign on his shop door read, “If the door is locked, come to the log cabin” In other words, if Darwin was home, he would do his best to help you out.  He was known throughout the community as an all around nice guy.  Darwin Avery will be greatly missed, and not forgotten.

Enclosed with your newsletter is a 25-question survey.  Because of the continuing controversy over our current flying site situation, the RLMAC Board Members and I have decided our best solution is to poll our members with a membership wide survey.  Every club member deserves the right to voice their opinion and provide feedback on any concerns they may have.  We are not requiring names, but feel free to leave your name if your comments or concerns require a follow up.  We would like to publish the Yes-No, and multiple-choice results, but no names will be mentioned. It should be

very interesting to see how much interest and direction we show as a group. Please return your completed survey to our Rice Lake P.O. box 406, or bring it to the next meeting. We would like to have the results by the time of our next newsletter. Your participation will be greatly appreciated.

Our newer club members may not be aware of the ongoing commotion over our Moon Lake Park flying site. We share our space with the Rice Lake Soccer Association and other park users, and many members have been unhappy with the available flying schedule and the safety conditions over the past few years.  My main concern is with the newly completed paved walking and biking path through the park. The walking path falls within our normal flying area.  Because of the sloping landscape, the walking path is not visible from our flight line.  Pilots have no clear visual indication of the presence of park goers, or a way of controlling their presence.  Not a safe and controlled situation in my opinion. We do not condone flying over our own pit area, and we should not endanger the safety of others in the park.  If our members want to continue flying at Moon Lake Park on a regular basis, we need an understanding with the Parks and Recreation Department on how to remedy this safety issue, and a method of enforcement.  I must stress that even this cooperation will be a part time situation. We simply cannot expect to control a city park at all times we wish to fly.

We do not currently know how many of our members need a club flying site, but we do feel the situation is urgent for those in need.  With the end of another flying season soon approaching, its time to act now if we want to secure another flying location for next season.  Our club has a field acquisition committee in place, with a few possible locations in mind. We only need the approval of our members to move forward.

No meeting minutes this month as our secretary was granted some personal time off.  I think I covered most of it here anyhow. These long reports take a lot out of me, and I may need a day off myself soon J

Till next time… Kevin

Announcements

Our next meeting will be held on Sunday October 10th at 3:00 PM at our Moon Lake Park flying site. We now have a key to the park’s meeting building in case of bad weather. We need to elect one non-officer club member to fill our open Board of Directors position. If you are interested in being a Board Member, or would like to nominate someone, please come to our next meeting or contact a Board member or myself.  Mail your request to RLMAC P.O. box 406 54868
